Estate planning isn’t always something that people look forward to. After all, who really wants to think about the end of life and what will happen when they’re gone? However, planning for these matters ahead of time will ensure all assets are distributed accordingly and make matters easier on your surviving family.
Choosing the right estate planning attorney to assist in these matters makes all the difference. At Thornton Law Firm, we want our Triangle residents to know exactly what to look for and how to determine they have found the right attorney.
4 questions to ask before hiring an estate planning attorney are:
- What is their experience in estate planning? Some attorneys will be more specialized than others. And, not every person going in to estate planning will need sophisticated services. It’s best to still look for an attorney with at least a few years of experience in dealing with trusts and estates.
- Do they have a maintenance program? Some estate planning agents will simply draft the necessary documents and send them off. It’s better to have an attorney who will check-in annually to update you on new laws or better planning techniques. This ensures that your plan is up-to-date and accurate when implemented.
- What fees to they charge? Some attorneys will charge flat rates for their services while others will charge hourly. Be sure to inquire about this so you know exactly what you’re responsible for, especially if certain services aren’t included in the fixed fees.
- Do you want to work closely with the attorney? Ultimately, you want to feel comfortable sharing personal financial and family matters with this attorney. If you don’t feel comfortable then it likely won’t be a great fit.
